The Fountain of the Tritons in the Island Garden, Aranjuez, Velázquez

A rural landscape featuring "The Fountain of the Tritons," which still exists today. Made of white marble, it is located on the side of the Royal Palace of Madrid. Since the mid-17th century, around the time this canvas was painted, the fountain, by an unknown author, was located in Aranjuez, but later, in the 19th century, it was relocated.
The painting showcases as its main figures three tritons (fish-men), with lighting characteristic of the countryside, lush trees in the background, and dry land on the path. Passersby seem to be enjoying a leisurely day in the Jardín de la Isla (Garden of the Island). The composition is in shades of green and yellow, clearly showcasing Diego's style, working with thick brushstrokes, a fundamental method for creating or "painting the air" as art critics have said since those times.
