This is one of the most noble paintings of Christ crucified in history. This painting is recognized as a masterpiece of male anatomy and has inspired literary and pictorial works.
The entire composition brings to mind Psalm 45, verse 2, which reads:
Of all men you are the most handsome, gracefulness is a dew upon your lips, for God has blessed you for ever.
The work depicts the naked body of Jesus after death, evidenced by the tilt of the head, the tension in the arms, the pallor of the skin, and especially by the wound in his side, inflicted post-mortem. The posture is remarkably delicate; the body, sculpted with the most aesthetic proportions of the time, and the detail of the four nails are elements learned from his father-in-law and mentor, Francisco Pacheco, a scholar of the crucifixion during those years.
