Irises, Van Gogh

This painting titled Irises was painted by Van Gogh in 1889, a year before his death. He was inspired to paint these flowers by the ones in the very garden of the mental asylum where he was staying. It is a work full of air and life; each of the "Irises" painted by the artist is unique. Van Gogh carefully studied the movement and shapes of the plant to create a variety of silhouettes among wavy, bent, and curled lines. The painting is currently housed in the J. Paul Getty Museum, United States.
