Once upon a time, a small group of tribal chiefs, secretly gathered by the famous Claudius Civilis, also known as Julius Civilis, in a sacred forest in the middle of the Rhine delta to fight against the empire that oppressed them and often demanded their youth as a tribute using them as they please.
Claudius Civilis, a Batavian noble, led the Batavian Revolt against Rome between 69 and 70 AD, after being imprisoned and his brother murdered by the Romans. Capitalizing on tribal discontent and Rome's weakness, he incited a Germanic rebellion. Civilis became a symbol of resistance.
His epic was immortalized by Rembrandt, who captured the solemn oath with a masterful chiaroscuro technique, reflecting the tension and drama of that historical moment. With a projection of lights ranging from white to red, he bathed the entire scene in yellow, explicitly blending the swords and oath-takers in a masterful fusion that symbolizes the union of the congregated.
