Saint Peter in Tears, Murillo

This dramatic image of the Apostle Peter corresponds to the biblical account of the weeping that arises from having betrayed his master by denying him three times. In turn, his hands are clasped as if begging for forgiveness. The oil painting has the classic elements of Baroque chiaroscuro, a somber background, and a light that descends diagonally, outlining the figures and especially the character's face.

In the early years, the authorship of the work was disputed, with claims that it was made by José de Ribera, although the issue was soon clarified, the strong influence that he had on this and other works of the author is evident.
