The Treachery of Images, Magritte

In the work, it reads "Ceci n'est pas une pipe", which means "This is not a Pipe".
This was the artist's statement about this work, defending that it was not a pipe, but only the image of a pipe.
The phrase over the painting caused huge criticisms and anger among the community, even to this day, producing numerous works from great artists who have wanted to talk about it, like the renowned street artist from England, Banksy, in his work called "This is a pipe".
This simple argument, which reinforces the division between reality and image, was used to justify much of his works, especially those more wild and surrealistic paintings.
