The canvas proposes a disconcerting image, intending to make the viewer aware of the preconceived ideas they hold without realizing it. In this case, the idea of "mermaid," deeply rooted in the collective imagination, becomes implausible, although undoubtedly no less so than the traditional mermaid, which is a collective invention that has nothing real about it.
