In the artist's compositions, it is very common to find a horizontal dividing element, which sharply separates the observer from the world present within the painting. In this case, he uses a train track for the purpose.
With this, according to experts, he makes the work impenetrable, establishing a dividing line that further enhances solitude and melancholy.
The structure of the house is outlined with a minimum of black paint, this is appreciated in the shaded columns and windows on the right.
The house itself is painted from darkness to light, Hopper projected the structure with diagonal lines and created a notable contrast of light.
The left side of the house, struck by sunlight, is painted with light and opaque colors. On top of this base, Hopper defined the shapes with blue lines.
The train track is also executed from darkness to light, the bright colors: oranges and ochres, used for the sleepers and the rusty rail, were painted with short brushstrokes and in random directions.
Although the pale sky appears as the background of the work, it seems that once the house was painted, Hopper went over its edges, which are believed to have been the final touches of the painting.
