Year of death: | 1923, Madrid. |
Style: | Luminism and Spanish Impressionism. |
Born on February 27, 1863, this Valencian artist captures in his art the periods of luminism and impressionism, hugely important for the artistic evolution that leads to contemporary art.
His use of white as one of the protagonist colors, has managed to make his works have an unparalleled luminosity and a unique signature that easily distinguishes him from his peers.
The era in which he lived (between the 1860s and 1920s) was crucial for the development of history, so much so, that the changes of that era affected humanity in every sense. Almost 100 years after the industrial revolution of 1790, answers were sought to essential questions posed by the philosophies of Marx, Nietzsche, and others. Art also launched answers, giving rise to a painting that sought to identify itself. Thus Claude Monet, Vincent van Gogh, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, and many others, managed to form the bases of a bold and transparent style.
The most important contribution of Sorolla was the fluid brushstroke and the colorfulness with which he developed an authentic avant-garde style, tinged with the cultural and philosophical concerns of the time.
His greatest legacy focused on mythological, historical, and social representations (Spanish costumbrismo), becoming a true master in this field. From his first impactful work: "Another Margarita", to the end of his days.
