The Night, Max Beckmann

This is his best-known and most visceral work.
It is an icon of the postwar German artistic movement New Objectivity, which primarily advocated for the establishment of realism, then antagonistic to expressionist ideas, that lent all subjects a degree of idealism and romanticism.

This type of work aimed to plant feet firmly on the ground, in terms of the atrocities that man was capable of and had been manifest in the war.
